LIFESCAN INTRODUCES UNIQUE DATA MANAGEMENT HOSPITAL SYSTEM New system offers flexible and reliable communications solutions for a wide variety of individual information management and data integration needs MILPITAS, Calif., February 10, 1998- LifeScan, the leading maker of blood glucose monitoring systems, has just introduced DataLinkTM, a data management system enabling multi-patient health care institutions to electronically transmit blood glucose data from their remote point-of-care locations to their centralized laboratory information systems (LIS). Once in the LIS, a patient's data can be merged with the patient's Electronic Medical Record so that it is widely and readily accessible throughout the institution. In addition to improving data access and streamlining retrieval, the DataLink System helps an institution increase workflow efficiency, improve billing, and track material usage. "For the first time, health care professionals have a comprehensive system that combines the precision and accuracy for which LifeScan products are known with state-of-the-art connectivity and data management capabilities," said Roseann Burhenne, senior product manager at LifeScan. "With the DataLink System, we've provided multi-patient settings a streamlined solution for reliably retrieving blood-glucose values and seamlessly folding them into the integrated patient record." LifeScan developed DataLink to be compatible with its SureStep®Pro Professional Blood Glucose Management System. Using the hospital's existing analog phone lines, DataLink's bi-directional infrared technology facilitates the transfer of patient blood glucose data from the SureStepPro Bedside Unit-located at the point of care-to the SureStep®Pro Workstation. This easy-to-use technology eliminates the need for point-of-care managers to walk around with a laptop computer collecting data from each bedside unit. DataLink's bi-directional communication ability also enables the SureStep®Pro Workstation to transmit important information, such as new test strip lot numbers and control ranges, back to the bedside unit. The process of transferring data from the nursing station or other remote point-of-care location is begun by inserting the SureStep®Pro Bedside Unit into the cradle of the DataLink Connection Module, which itself is connected to the analog phone line. With a touch of its screen, the bedside unit transmits data through the connection module and the analog phone line into the SureStep®Pro Workstation. After data is transmitted to the workstation, the SureStep®Pro Interface Connections use a scripted interface to enable the workstation to remotely transfer the data to the institution's LIS. To eliminate the need for an additional computer and save valuable office space for the institution, the scripted interface has been embedded in the SureStep®Pro Workstation. LifeScan also offers a program that provides an installation project coordinator for the institution. The project coordinator works with the institution to plan, coordinate, and customize a data integration plan that accommodates the institution's specific timetables and information system needs. The SureStep®Pro Hospital System, available since July 1997, was developed for multi-patient settings requiring sophisticated data management to meet stringent regulatory and quality control needs. LifeScan is part of the Johnson & Johnson family of diagnostic companies including Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics. LifeScan is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with diabetes.
