FACT SHEET
SURESTEP®FLEXX PROFESSIONAL BLOOD GLUCOSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Overview
SureStep®Flexx Professional Blood Glucose Management SystemThe SureStep®Flexx System from LifeScan, Inc. combines flexibility, ease-of-use, and comprehensive connectivity solutions for a scalable point-of-care blood glucose management system that can meet the broad range of hospital customer needs for glucose data collection and integration.

Small, light and easy to use, the handheld bedside meter for the new system offers a variety of configuration options so that it can be optimized to meet each hospital's specific needs -- from a "no-frills" stand-alone meter to a "fully loaded" advanced feature set for robust data management capabilities. It also features the accuracy of SureStep® technology as well as its off-meter blood sample application, which can help the institution with infection control measures.

The SureStepFlexx System also incorporates the DataLink™ Data Management System's complete selection of connectivity solutions for the transmission and management of glucose data between the point of care and the laboratory/health information system (LIS or HIS).

Features of the SureStepFlexx System

Scalable and Flexible

  • The bedside meter is available with an optional barcode scanner, which reads test strip lot numbers and operator/patient IDs, helping to save time and reduce data entry errors. The meter accepts four barcode symbologies (i.e. Code 39, Code 128, Codabar, and Interleaved 2 of 5), as well as 18-character patient and operator alpha-numeric IDs.

  • The system accommodates multiple bedside meters, and each meter can be individually configured, depending on how it is used in the hospital (e.g. in the operating room, at the bedside, in a satellite facility, etc.). Configuration changes can include various lock-out options (e.g. QC, download timeframe exceeded, non-validated or non-certified operator, etc.) and failed-QC or patient critical-warning messages (e.g. suggested actions to take if glucose levels are too high or too low).

Easy to Use

  • The SureStepFlexx System can be used right out of the box, as it contains a number of commonly preferred default settings. Or it may be programmed to provide customized meter configurations and data management.

  • The handheld bedside meter provides three "quick keys" (i.e. "back," "menu," and "OK") on an intuitive, menu-driven touch screen that prompts the user through patient testing and other procedures. The meter is used with SureStep®Pro Test Strips, which feature a touchable, absorbent membrane for easy patient blood sample application.

  • The main screen on the DataLink™ Workstation for the SureStepFlexx System has a graphic user interface and just three screen tabs, to simplify system management:

    • the Status Screen, to check current functioning of the overall system;

    • the Configuration Screen, to establish meter and system settings and make subsequent adjustments;

    • and the Report Screen, to generate standard and customized reports.

  • The system comes with 12 standardized reports to support JCAHO and CAP requirements (e.g., QC statistics, trend graph, data log, operator certification, etc.). These reports can be customized, or original reports can be created.

Data Management Capabilities

  • The SureStepFlexx System features the three-part DataLink Data Management System, which includes:

    • DataLink™ Connect, for bi-directional data transfer between bedside meters and the workstation via modem, multiple receiving modems, or network;

    • DataLink™ Control, for monitoring, tracking and managing all patient and QC test results from a central workstation or database application; and

    • DataLink™ Interface, for fast transfer of POC test results into the LIS or HIS, via scripted interface or HL-7-compatible electronic data interface.

  • The DataLink™ System for SureStep®Flexx provides exception-based data management. Constantly scanning for exceptions to customer-set parameters, the system's Status Screen provides alert icons only for those areas where exceptions exist. This frees the point-of-care coordinator from long hours of monitoring reports, enabling her/him to focus directly on addressing problem areas.

  • While the DataLink Workstation for the SureStepFlexx System provides a standard set-up and screen view, the Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 database allows institutions with intensive data management needs to create their own report functions for more powerful filtering, sorting and analysis of data.
