AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF DIABETES EDUCATORS NAMESMARY JO DUDLEY EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
Diabetes Educator Recognized for Outstanding Dedication in the Daily Practice of Patient

PHILADELPHIA, PA, August 9, 2002 - The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). today named Mary Jo Dudley, RN, BSN, CDE, as Diabetes Educator of the Year. The AADE award has been sponsored by LifeScan, Inc. since 1986, and is given to an individual who has made a special contribution to diabetes education through dedication and innovation in the daily practice of patient care. LifeScan is an operating company of Johnson & Johnson, which earlier this year launched The Campaign for Nursing's Future, a major drive aimed at building the nursing profession with an annual nursing-student scholarship program and ongoing promotional recruitment initiatives.

"Mary Jo Dudley is an educator in the true sense of the word," said Bob Coradini, President of LifeScan. "Her dedication, both personally and professionally, to the diabetes field is immeasurable. Mary Jo's innovative teaching style and commitment to collaborative efforts for the improvement of diabetes education have resulted in true, tangible, and outstanding results. She is a role model for all educators and represents the essence of what this award is about."

Through her groundbreaking efforts as a diabetes educator, Mary Jo has been able to effectively tailor her teaching style to meet the needs of individuals with diabetes, helping them to manage their disease. As the founder and program manager of the diabetes program at Lamprey Health Care in Newmarket, New Hampshire, Mary Jo has used her knowledge of the learning process to tailor a program that meets the needs of a patient population facing serious social, economic, and literacy challenges. Mary Jo is aware that each person learns and responds differently, and she has creatively changed patient care through the development of such innovative educational tools as the "glucose wand," "personal diabetes cards" and the "A1c pillow."

While at Lamprey Health Care, Mary Jo has also collaborated with Exeter Hospital in establishing a community-based diabetes education program that offers group classes throughout the year.

Mary Jo's dedication to diabetes education is also evidenced by her work in helping to form Camp Carefree, a diabetes camp for children where she serves as a diabetes educator and camp nurse. Mary Jo was also instrumental in the formation of the New Hampshire Association of Diabetes Educators and served as the first elected president of that organization. She works with the State of New Hampshire Diabetes Program and has been instrumental in the development and implementation of care guidelines for diabetes. As well, her work on a state level to establish care guidelines for gestational diabetes has helped bring about the recognition and adoption of those guidelines on a national level.

Other finalists for this year's AADE Diabetes Educator of the Year Award included:

  • Janice Ovans Davie, MS, RD, CDE, CD, Nutrition and Diabetes Specialist at Lakeshore Medical Clinic in St. Francis, WI, and an Adjunct Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee;
