DIAMETRICS MEDICAL STRIKES PACT WITH JOHNSON & JOHNSON'S LIFESCAN UNIT TO ADD GLUCOSE MONITORING TECHNOLOGY TO ITS BLOOD ANALYSIS SYSTEM

ST. PAUL, Minn., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Diametrics Medical, Inc. (Nasdaq-NNM: DMED) has announced plans to incorporate blood glucose monitoring in its IRMA(R) SL Blood Analysis System through an agreement with LifeScan, a Johnson & Johnson company, (NYSE: JNJ), the leading maker of blood glucose monitoring systems for people with diabetes.

The IRMA SL Blood Analysis System, used in hospitals worldwide, is a hand-held blood analyzer that measures critical blood gas, electrolyte and hematocrit levels immediately at the patient's bedside. The integration of LifeScan's SureStep(R) technology into the IRMA SL analyzer will give medical professionals a system that can also measure a patient's blood glucose level -- critical information that is necessary for medical decisions. The system collects and displays the comprehensive test results on the IRMA SL display screen. The data is captured, stored and exported to the IRMA Data Management System (IDMS) and/or the hospital's clinical information system and included in the permanent patient record.

"Our simple and accurate SureStep technology, also used in one of our consumer products, will offer a new level of convenience in blood glucose monitoring for hospitals using the IRMA SL system," said John Klopp, LifeScan's Vice President of Business Development. "Its patented test strip technology provides advanced safety features like true off-meter dosing that allows blood to be applied to the absorbent test strip before it is inserted into the meter to minimize the risk of cross contamination and infection. The test strip also features a unique color confirmation dot that indicates when enough blood has been applied to help ensure accurate results in as little as fifteen seconds."

"Such a collaboration provides clinicians with a unique, portable, economical bedside source for glucose, blood gas, electrolytes and hematocrit testing," said David Giddings, Diametrics Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "The agreement with LifeScan is an example of how both companies are actively pursuing opportunities to improve the diagnostic options available to clinicians."

The combined product is expected to be available in some countries by the fourth quarter of 1997. The companies will also collaborate on worldwide sales and marketing efforts including activities at professional meetings and communication efforts to inform, support and educate customers.
