LIFESCAN INTRODUCES ENHANCED SureStep®Pro WITH VERSION 2.0 SOFTWARE AND IMPROVED Datalink" DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, NOW WITH ETHERNET AND MULTIPLE RECEIVING MODEMS CONNECTIVITY
New Enhancements Make It Easier To Meet Regulatory Requirements

MILPITAS, Calif., April 1, 1999 -- LifeScan, Inc. has introduced enhancements to its SureStep®Pro Professional Blood Glucose Management System and the SureStep®Pro Datalink™ System, the data management program enabling the electronic transfer of glucose data between the point-of-care, the SureStep®Pro Workstation and the hospital laboratory information system. The upgraded version, SureStep®Pro 2.0 with Datalink, has both Ethernet and multiple-receiving-modems connectivity capabilities, giving hospitals new options for the bi-directional transfer of data between the bedside and the workstation.

Supplementing Datalink's existing single-modem option, launched in early 1998, the new additions enable a hospital to also transfer data 1) over its own computer network through an Ethernet Connection, or 2) using multiple receiving modems and a terminal server. Both new options allow for the simultaneous uploading of as many as 50 SureStep®Pro Bedside Units to the workstation.

"LifeScan's ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of our hospital and laboratory customers has propelled SureStepPro technology one step further on the road of innovation in point-of-care glucose monitoring and data management," said Michele Ward, SureStepPro product manager at LifeScan. "This package of new enhancements is just another addition to the continuously growing list of benefits that SureStepPro provides."

SureStepPro version 2.0 technology offers an array of new tools designed to improve functionality and facilitate the process of meeting regulatory compliance:

  • True Quality Control (QC) Lockout assists in ensuring that an operator performs a QC test prior to patient testing. The system administrator can now select one of two options for the QC lockout: 1. Numeric value displays that show actual QC results; or 2. a pass/fail display, a new option that indicates whether the QC test was "passed" or "failed" without providing a numeric test result value. Selecting the latter option discourages operators from running patient blood samples in the QC mode.

  • Operator Recertification allows the system administrator to automatically capture operator-specific recertification data. Here, the system administrator has two selections: 1. A designated time interval allowed for recertification (set between 1 and 24 months); and 2. A specified number of successful high, low, normal, and patient tests an operator is required to perform within this designated time interval. After these selections are made, the information is uploaded to the SureStep®Pro System Database to facilitate operator recertification.

  • Bedside Unit Utilization Table makes meter tracking easier by providing the system administrator with the location of each bedside unit in the hospital. The administrator can then use this information to ensure the most efficient use of all the bedside units in the facility. Using the new Add-In reports, the administrator can also list all bedside units and operators currently in the system.

Additionally, SureStepPro 2.0 offers new features that make the SureStepPro Workstation software even easier to use than before. For example, the Status Tabs on the home page Testing Status Screen provide bold, yellow warning symbols to alert the workstation user to areas of the institution's point-of-care program that need attention, such as non-validated operators or reagents. Other graphical interface features include an Active List Bar, which provides an icon-based alternative to pull-down menus, and a MeterLink Icon, which -- with the double-click of a mouse -- enables the administrator to view the connection method and communication port of each nursing unit's Datalink™ Connection Module.

Operating from a Windows NT 4.0 platform, SureStepPro 2.0 now offers a desktop unit with a Pentium II 400 MHz Processor for hospital sites utilizing remote connectivity.

The SureStepPro Professional Blood Glucose Management System, available since July 1997, was developed for multi-patient settings requiring sophisticated data management to meet stringent regulatory and quality control needs.

Dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with diabetes, LifeScan is the leading manufacturer of blood glucose monitors for people with diabetes. Serving the needs of more than 300 SureStepPro customers, LifeScan has more connectivity installments than any other manufacturer of blood glucose data management systems. It is part of Johnson & Johnson's group of diagnostic companies, which also includes Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics.
