NEW FINE POINT LANCET INTRODUCED FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES
--Less Pain Associated with Finger Sticks--

MILPITAS, Calif., -- August 13, 1998 -- LifeScan, the leading maker of blood glucose meters for people with diabetes, is introducing the OneTouch® FinePoint Lancet, which is 23 percent finer than the original OneTouch® Lancet.

"Since many users have found the OneTouch FinePoint Lancet less painful than regular lancets, this new product will be an attractive alternative for people with diabetes," stated David Thompson, Lancet product manager for LifeScan. The new lancets work especially well for patients who rely on the FastTake® Blood Glucose Monitoring System because it requires a very small blood sample. People who have difficulty obtaining sufficient blood with the new lancet may need to continue to use the original OneTouch Lancet.

The 100-count carton of OneTouch FinePoint Lancets will cost approximately $9.50 to $10.50 at retail. The new Medicare benefits effective July 1 include coverage for lancets for all Part B members with a doctor's prescription. This makes OneTouch FinePoint Lancets even easier to obtain for the two million newly-covered Medicare enrollees with diabetes.

Committed to improving the quality of life for people with diabetes, LifeScan is the leading maker of blood glucose monitoring systems. The LifeScan consumer product family includes the new FastTake System for on-the-go diabetes patients who want a "take anywhere, test anytime" meter; the OneTouch® Profile® Diabetes Tracking System for people who are actively involved in managing their diabetes; the SureStep® System for people new to testing or who want additional assistance with the challenges of testing; and the OneTouch® Basic® Meter for people who just want simple, accurate test results.

More physicians, diabetes educators and pharmacists recommend LifeScan systems than any other brand. Every day, more than three million people with diabetes rely on LifeScan systems for simple testing and accurate results. LifeScan can be found at http://www.LifeScan.com, on the World Wide Web.
