TWO LEADERS IN DIABETES CARE ANNOUNCE WORLDWIDE DISEASE MANAGEMENT AGREEMENT --Novo Nordisk and LifeScan Join Forces to Provide Superior Diabetes Management Offer of Insulin and Blood Glucose Monitoring Systems-- Milpitas, CA; Copenhagen, Denmark (June 14, 1995) -- Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE: NVO), the world's largest producer of insulin, and LifeScan, Inc., the leading maker of blood glucose monitoring systems, today announced a worldwide agreement to provide comprehensive diabetes management solutions that enhance treatment for people with diabetes. Under the agreement, the two companies will work together to bring two complementary product lines to people with diabetes: Novo Nordisk's insulin products and future oral hypoglycemic agents (OHAs), and LifeScan's blood glucose monitoring systems. Implementation of the agreement will be determined by the two companies on a country-by-country basis. "By jointly marketing with Novo Nordisk, we will be able to benefit from each other's strengths in providing people with diabetes and health professionals with simple, accessible solutions to their diabetes management needs," said Richard Wiesner, LifeScan president. "The agreement between Novo Nordisk and LifeScan reflects the commitment of both companies to excellence in the management of diabetes, not simply the manufacture of diabetes products," said Mads Ovlisen, president and CEO of Novo Nordisk A/S. As an American company, LifeScan brings substantial, first-hand knowledge of the U.S. blood glucose monitoring market to the alliance, while Novo Nordisk's extensive global experience, especially in Europe and Japan, will help LifeScan globalize its activities expeditiously. As a result of this agreement, people with diabetes will be able to take advantage of a complete diabetes management offer, which stresses the importance of linking the use of therapeutics and glucose monitors, as well as educational material, therapeutic guidelines, and compliance programs. "Our efforts will be strengthened further by new initiatives in educational training and behavioral modification, as well as the application of recent developments in information technology in diabetes management," Wiesner explained. "Novo Nordisk and LifeScan also recognize that total diabetes management is extremely important in order to reduce the high costs of care to people with diabetes, providers and payers, and to maintain a strong competitive position," said Ovlisen. "With the application of optimal treatment guidelines, which includes the availability and correct use of drugs and blood glucose monitoring systems, quality of care will increase and costs decrease." An integrated approach in diabetes care with insulin and self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is important to the successful outcome of diabetes management. Research published in recent years has shown that the debilitating effects of diabetes can be reduced by as much as 60% through compliance with intensive insulin therapy and self-monitoring of blood glucose. LifeScan, a Johnson & Johnson company, is committed to improving the quality of life for people with diabetes. For home and hospital use, the company's OneTouch® Meters, OneTouch® Test Strips and Control Solution, form an accurate and reliable system that helps patients and their healthcare professionals determine the effectiveness of prescribed medication, diet and exercise programs. OneTouch, Systems are recommended by more physicians, diabetes educators and pharmacists than any other brand.
