ADVANCE IN DIABETES MANAGEMENT INTRODUCED BY LIFESCAN
--LifeScan Company Press Releases -- Advance in Diabetes Management Introduced By LifeScan--

MILPITAS, Calif., June 12, 1995 -- This country's 7 million people diagnosed with diabetes now have a new, advanced self-monitoring system that is surprisingly simple to use. The OneTouch® Profile® Diabetes Tracking System is unique in that it alerts users when their blood glucose level is dangerously high or low. People with diabetes must frequently monitor their blood glucose levels to help manage their disease and prevent the complications of uncontrolled diabetes such as blindness, stroke, heart disease, nerve and kidney damage and even death.

LifeScan, a Johnson & Johnson company, developed the OneTouch Profile System to address the results of the National Institutes of Health recent landmark study, the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), which proved that keeping blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible reduced serious complications involving the eyes, kidneys and nerves by up to 60%. "The OneTouch Profile Diabetes Tracking System is ideal for anyone who is actively involved in controlling their diabetes on a daily basis," said Nancy Katz, LifeScan's Vice President of Marketing. "It combines simple testing with the key information diabetes patients and their healthcare professionals need to determine the effectiveness of treatment or to make necessary adjustments."

Diabetes affects 16 million Americans. It is a chronic disease in which the body does not make, or does not properly use insulin, the hormone that helps the body use energy from food. Unfortunately, due to symptoms that are often ignored or mistaken for those of other diseases -- such as fatigue, blurred vision, frequent urination, increased hunger and thirst, etc. -- about half of all people with diabetes do not know they have the disease.

Unique to the OneTouch Profile System is its ability to communicate with the user in English, Spanish, or any one of 17 other languages to alert them to conditions that may require action. For example, a low blood glucose test result (60mg/dL or below) will cause the system to ask: "Do you need a snack?" This warning can help the user detect and prevent low blood glucose (hypoglycemia), which can lead to disorientation and unconsciousness if not treated quickly. High blood glucose (hyperglycemia) test results (240 mg/dL or above) will trigger a signal to "Check ketones" or "Call Dr." message to help avoid sustained high blood glucose levels which, over time, can lead to serious or even deadly complications. In addition, the system guides the user through the test procedure, lets the user know when a blood sample is too small for an accurate test, and even when the system must be cleaned.

Weighing less than 5 ounces, the palm-sized OneTouch Profile System also functions as a complete "Automatic Log Book," reducing the need for users to manually record information about their blood glucose readings, medication, diet and other activities that affect blood glucose levels. Up to 250 test results are stored automatically with date and time. Users can also record their insulin types and dosages with date and time as well as their intake of carbohydrates.

Fifteen "Event Labels" let users link test results with activities that affect blood glucose levels, such as meals, medication and exercise. Test averages are available by these activity labels to let users and their healthcare professionals quickly spot trends in blood glucose test results. All information stored in the OneTouch Profile System's memory can be transferred to a personal computer for printout or analysis.

Despite these advanced capabilities, the OneTouch Profile System doesn't sacrifice simplicity -- it uses the same 3-step procedure common to all OneTouch Systems: 1) Turn on the system and insert a test strip; 2) Apply a drop of blood; 3) Accurate results automatically appear in 45 seconds.

The OneTouch Profile Diabetes Tracking System will be available in stores in July. The system includes everything needed to begin testing: OneTouch Profile Blood Glucose Meter, Genuine OneTouch® Test Strips, Control Solution, lancing device and lancets, carry case, batteries, and complete instructions. The system comes with a five-year warranty, 30-day money-back guarantee, and 24-hour technical support via a toll-free number: 1 800 227-8862.

LifeScan, a Johnson & Johnson company, is committed to improving the quality of life for people with diabetes. For home and hospital use, the company's OneTouch Meters, Genuine OneTouch Test Strips and Control Solution form an accurate and reliable system that helps patients and their healthcare professionals determine the effectiveness of prescribed medication, diet and exercise programs. OneTouch Systems are recommended by more physicians, diabetes educators and pharmacists than any other brand. More than three million OneTouch Systems have been purchased to help people with diabetes lead healthier lives.
