LIFESCAN INTRODUCES REVOLUTIONARY APPROACH TO MULTI-PATIENT BLOOD GLUCOSE MANAGEMENT
--Intelligent interface, sophisticated data management software--

MILPITAS, Calif, Wednesday, July 16, 1997 -- LifeScan, the leading maker of blood glucose monitoring systems for home and hospital use, has introduced a revolutionary new point of care glucose monitoring system and computer workstation ideal for meeting the needs of hospitals and other multi-patient settings.

Available in July, the new SureStep®Pro Professional Blood Glucose Management System with its companion computer workstation includes a computerized hand held bedside unit featuring a menu-driven touch screen interface, built-in barcode scanner, and infrared data transfer capabilities. The system addresses hospitals' unique need for simple, efficient data collection, data management, quality control, regulatory compliance and infection control.

"Virtually all the blood glucose monitoring systems used in hospitals today are consumer products that have been adapted for hospital use," explains Michele Ward, SureStepPro Product Manager. "In contrast, SureStepPro is designed for hospital use. From its intelligent interface with guided prompts, to its sophisticated data management software, no other system offers hospitals as much power and convenience in a hand held unit."

SureStepPro offers patient care providers an array of convenient features to assure simple, safe and accurate bedside testing:

  • The innovative touch screen provides intuitive icons and text prompts that quickly lead the healthcare provider through all test procedures.

  • Patented test strips technology provides advanced safety features like an absorbent pad that stays dry to the touch and off-meter dosing to minimize the risk of infection.

  • Because the system is approved for capillary, venous, arterial and neonatal blood samples, the hospital can standardize on a single system and test strip for all blood glucose monitoring applications.

  • A built-in barcode scanner and infrared data port streamlines data capture and data transfer.

  • The bedside unit stores up to 2,500 patient and quality control test results with event codes, flags and error messages.

The SureStepPro System offers lab administrators a variety of tools to satisfy internal quality control standards and assist in regulatory compliance.

  • The test strip features a unique color confirmation dot that indicates correct sample volume to help ensure accurate results.

  • Each bedside unit is custom configured by the workstation software. For example, the administrator can choose to require patient and/or operator Ids. Tests can be prevented (QC lockout) or warnings displayed for "QC due" if QC is not performed on a scheduled basis. Bedside units assigned to different nursing units or sites can have different configurations.

  • Pre-formatted reports with customer options are available to meet internal hospital, CAP and JCAHO requirements. Patient and QC logs and trend graphics, QC statistics and linearity graphs, and operator and nursing unit reports can be queried on-line of printed.

  • Bedside unit event codes and patient messages are customer programmed by the workstation administrator. For example, a failed QC test will generate detailed prompts for corrective action. A critically high patient test result (as defined by the system administrator) will signal the healthcare provider to take a variety of actions such as re-doing the test of calling the doctor. Results are also flagged in Data Review at the bedside unit and uploaded into the workstation.

The SureStepPro System's architecture is designed to accept future product enhancements that will allow even greater integration with laboratory and hospital information systems. LifeScan also offers a SureStep consumer product using the same test technology, providing the benefit of standardized test results between inpatient and outpatient use.
