Special Features of the OneTouch® UltraSmart® Combined Meter & Electronic Logbook
--Helping People Transform Blood Glucose Measurement Into Diabetes Management--

LifeScan's new OneTouch UltraSmart System makes it easy:

  • To get fast, less-painful blood glucose results¹, and be prompted-when a blood glucose result is out of range-to enter more information that might suggest a cause;
  • To eliminate paper logbooks by enabling users to quickly capture additional important information about factors affecting a user's blood glucose level or overall diabetes health; and
  • To retrieve and understand this information by automatically organizing and presenting it in meaningful ways that can help users spot glucose trends and make healthier choices.

How the System Makes Testing Easier and Results More Understandable:

During blood glucose testing, the OneTouch UltraSmart System provides:

  • A prompt for more information in the form of a "comment," when a blood glucose test result is out of range-whether too high or low. Users and their healthcare professionals can also determine what glucose range is most appropriate, and then customize the system's settings. If a test result is outside the user's specified range, the system asks the user to enter an explanation in the form of a comment, which would then be selected from a menu offering choices related to exercise, mealtimes and state of health. These can help explain possible causes or remedies for low or high results.

  • Blood glucose test results in 5-seconds and the option of testing on the arm² , where there are fewer nerve endings and which many users find much less painful than traditional fingertip testing.

  • A backlight on the meter's display, to make testing possible when full lighting isn't available or convenient.

  • Specific Prompts when results are too low (20 to 70 mg/dL: "Do you need a snack?") or too high (240 mg/dL to 600 mg/dL: "Check ketones"³ ). At severely low or high levels, the system issues a "WARNING" and an indication of low ("Below 20 mg/dL") or high ("Above 600 mg/dL") glucose.

How Electronic Logbook Enables Quick, Easy Information Entry at Any Time:

The OneTouch UltraSmart System's SmartButtons™ allow quick and direct "Logbook Entries" about the array of factors involved in a patient's diabetes management plan:

  • Four SmartButtons help users capture information regarding key areas: Food, Exercise, Medication and Health. Each SmartButton is easily identified by a pictorial icon, such as the fork and knife depicted on the Food button.

  • Logbook entries can be made at any time, not just during a blood glucose test. For example, a user can enter logbook information when eating, when taking insulin or other medication, in conjunction with exercise, or when receiving the results from a doctor visit (e.g., cholesterol levels, blood pressure readings, weight, etc.). A logbook entry can also be identified as connected to a specific test result or as a stand-alone piece of information.

  • Logbook entries can provide detailed information that can be retrieved later to help explain blood glucose results or trends. With the Food SmartButton, for instance, the patient can enter the total calories and the number of carbohydrate, protein and fat grams consumed at a meal, which may explain, for example, a high glucose result seen after the meal.

  • The Electronic Logbook can store more than 3,000 pieces of information, including glucose results, comments and logbook entries,

How the Electronic Logbook Helps Organize Information and Make It Meaningful:

The FastFacts™ button provides quick access to a variety of helpful on-screen charts and graphs that can reveal useful patterns in blood glucose test results, including:

  • An assortment of easy-to-read charts, such as overall averages of glucose test results (going back in intervals of 7, 14, 30, 60 and 90 days), lists of glucose results or averages by meals (such as before breakfast, after lunch, etc.), and glucose result averages before or after exercising.

  • Graphs of all results or of results by time of day, such as before or after a specific meal. The graphs depict individual results over a given time period and show desired ranges for results, so patients can easily spot results that fall in-range and those that fall out of range, whether high or low.

  • The interactive graph of all test results allows the patient to individually scroll through each result. When a result is selected, it flashes, and the user can press a button to display more information about that specific result, such as attached comments or logbook entries. This interactive feature can be especially useful in determining, for example, what may have contributed to an especially high or low result.

¹Allows for a less painful stick when used with OneTouch UltraSoft Automatic Blood Sampler and OneTouch UltraSoft Lancets.
²Users should read the OneTouch UltraSmart Owner's Booklet and talk to their healthcare professional before beginning to test on the arm.
³The presence of ketones in a person with diabetes-determined by a urine self-test-can signal an insufficient insulin level and warn that diabetes may be out of control.
