Dental Care

A complication of diabetes is being prone to infection and having skin that heals slowly. That means taking care of your teeth and gums and tightly controlling your blood glucose levels. You should be aware:

  • High blood glucose levels can quickly worsen gum disease
  • Brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day to prevent gum infections
  • See your dentist regularly. Tell your dentist that you have diabetes so they provide additional care
  • Dentists may require proof of good blood glucose control before performing a dental procedure or oral surgery. And you may need to take antibiotics before having dental work. Check with your doctor before being treated for advanced dental problems.
